All eyes will soon be focused on WATCHIN' The PF Palace -
4/5/2022 :: Get ready to watch for pips
In preparation for the upcoming hatch, Falcon Cam watchers should see pipping by next week. The hatchlings begin pipping (breaking their shells) about 24 to 48 hours before hatching. They will break a small hole through the eggshell using a growth on their bill called an "egg tooth." The egg tooth is not a true tooth and will fall off soon after hatching. These falcons will hatch with their eyes open and covered with a long, thin coat of white fluffy down. Newly hatched falcons are relatively helpless and unable to stand.
In the case of the Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB) peregrine falcons, the female (48/AE) will continue to care for the young while the male (85/AK) will provide prey.
When the eggs first hatch, the female will brood (sit on or over the young) almost constantly. The female will feed the chicks by tearing off small pieces of flesh from prey provided by the male.
Stay tuned to the PA Falcon Cam to follow along!
