Watchin' & Walkin' Wednesday

From the latest entry on The Falcon Wire
8/24/2021  ::   Wandering falcons
The ledge at the Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB) has seen very little activity lately. It is clear that the two young peregrines, banded yellow and green, have dispersed. Peregrine falcons often return to breed near the area in which they fledged. Is that the future for these two? A female falcon that hatched at the RCSOB is now nesting in Baltimore.

The peregrine falcon is aptly named. The scientific name is Falco peregrinus. The name means "wandering falcon." Being wanderers, it is difficult to predict where these two young falcons might show up. Fortunately, since banding was reinstituted in 2021, there is the possibility that their bands will be identified. This will enable biologists to categorically know where these falcons originated from.
