DEP has received an update on the status of the peregrine falcon in Pennsylvania. At the conclusion of 2021, there were 73 peregrine pairs in PA. Of those, 22 nested on cliffs, 20 on buildings, 25 on bridges, three on smokestacks (including one on a blast furnace!), two in active quarries, and one on an uncertain substrate. As of 2021, no Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB) young are known to be nesting in PA. Most nests are located on human-made structures. This is not a surprise since the majority of urban sites are not as impacted by predators as nests on cliff sites. This is likely due to the lesser predation of one species in particular, the Great Horned Owl, on urban nest sites. These numbers bode well for the future of the peregrine falcon in PA. In the past year, numbers have exceeded the population numbers prior to the impact of the DDT era. This has led to the delisting of the peregrine falcon from both the state and federal endangered and threatened list. 2021 was quite a year for peregrine falcons in PA!

It sounds like you have a fun weekend planned. We got to walk yesterday morning but it won't happen this morning. Temps on my computer show 9 degrees and the wind is whipping so windchills are happening. Molly and I are stayin' inside today!

Hi you guys! It's already Sunday, I'm always so behind. It was 9 this morning when we went out for a walk. Katie loves it. Mama, not so much. She did agree to turn around sooner than normal and we trotted back to the house. She's napping now. I hope we don't have to go out often today. There's no wind to speak of here, and the sun is out, so it doesn't feel all that bad if we're not out long.
