Thursday Thinking

Wednesday morning at The PF Palace -

From The Latest Falcon Wire:
9/22/2021  ::   Ledge maintenance
Dedicated Falcon Cam followers likely noticed the cameras were down earlier today. This was done to perform some simple maintenance. Due to the impact of COVID-19, which limited access to the Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB) and the ledge, this work had been delayed. This is purposely timed outside of active seasons to minimize disturbance to the falcons. The resident female, banded 48/AE, was present and performed some flybys but she did not show any signs of stress such as aggressive calling. She did get a bit close to the "ledge walker" but without incident. Now viewers will notice the clean gravel in the nest-box and a clearer picture since all four camera lenses were cleaned.
Similar to owls, falcons also cast out pellets. While performing this maintenance a few were discovered on the ledge. Since raptors lack teeth, part of their digestive process includes casting out the items their system cannot digest, primarily bones. Falcon pellets are significantly smaller than then an owl pellet. Typically, the average mass of an owl pellet will be around 8 to 10 grams, while the average mass of a falcon pellet will be much smaller, around 2 to 3 grams. Not surprisingly, since numerous species of owls are much larger than peregrines and that most owls feed on a wider variety of prey, including mammals (which includes teeth), pellets generated by owls generally contain about twice the mass of falcon pellets.
