9/15/2021  ::   Seasonal activities on the ledge
Following the breeding season and with autumn on its way, Falcon Cam followers may have noticed the decrease in activity on the 15th floor ledge of the Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB). When not breeding, peregrine falcons are primarily solitary and defend territories. It's risky to leave the nesting area, as another peregrine may try to take over the site with a territorial battle. To avoid potential conflicts, the adults will occasionally be observed on the ledge to maintain their presence, often with prey to feed on.
In autumn, with central Pennsylvania's suitable climate, there is plenty of prey available, including pigeons and other small birds. A recent study conducted in Europe indicates that in spring and autumn the respective proportions of pigeons in the diet were 19% and 23%, increasing to 50% and 52% during summer and winter. The trend was reversed with respect to thrushes: dominant in peregrine prey during spring and autumn, their proportion decreased to 17% in summer and winter. This suggests that Falcon Cam followers should observe an increase in the RCSOB falcons feeding on American robins and other songbirds with a corresponding decrease in pigeons.
