5/5/2022 :: Volunteer for Watch and Rescue!
The peregrine falcon nest site located on the Rachel Carson State Office Building boasts a long history of success in terms of productivity.* Since 2000, this site has produced 98 eggs laid with 83 successfully hatching. A key component of this success is the Falcon Watch and Rescue program!
If you are birder or a wildlife enthusiast consider joining the volunteers of the Falcon Watch and Rescue team. Watch and Rescue consists of observing the falcon fledglings as they make their first flights. During this period, the fledglings are vulnerable to the dangers of an urban environment, so these flights are tracked. If a fledgling gets itself in a difficult situation, a rescue, performed by DEP staff and experienced personnel, will be performed. If the young falcon is unharmed it is returned to the Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB). In case of injury the bird will be taken to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. The 2022 Watch and Rescue with four fledglings to track could be a busy time!
Falcon Watch and Rescue is scheduled for May 22 to June 6 with four shifts operating each day, including weekends. If you would like to volunteer for a shift, please sign up at:

* Productivity is defined as the total number of young fledged or raised to the age of fledging in a defined population or area.

We have certainly seen more cloudy days than sunny days this week. Happy Friday!
