Saturday Sharing

The latest entry on the Falcon Wire

5/21/2021  ::   Exploring the ledge
At Day 28 since the first egg hatched, notice that the eyasses still spend the majority of the day sleeping but activity and movement has increased. This daytime activity will become routine prior to fledging. Falcon Cam followers will also hear increased vocalizations "begging" for food.
Feathers are also growing rapidly; body feathers are coming in and wing length has increased. Feather growth is key as fledging approaches. The wing feathers will continue to get longer and will also fill out. During this rapid growth, feathers will force out the down which the eyasses will remove as they preen.
Taking these indicators together, these young falcons continue to progress nicely in preparation for the first flights, which are still approximately 10 or more days ahead.
