4/21/2021 :: Waiting for a hatch, and reflecting on the recovery of raptors in PA
As the followers of PA Falcon Cam await the first hatch, which could be any day, and in conjunction with Earth Day, it is a good time to reflect on the recovery of raptors throughout Pennsylvania. Today, the Commonwealth has witnessed a remarkable recovery of three species of raptors, the bald eagle, osprey, and peregrine falcon, in the last 30 years. This recovery's roots lie further in the past, dating to 1962 with the release of the landmark book "Silent Spring," by Pennsylvania's Rachel Carson. Carson's main argument was that pesticides, such as DDT, had detrimental effects on the environment caused by bioaccumulation, which is the gradual accumulation of substances, which affected birds of prey and impaired their ability to reproduce. The result of Carson's work was the eventual ban of DDT within the United States and the founding of the Environmental Protection Agency by President Richard Nixon in 1970. Unfortunately, Carson never saw the impact her work had, succumbing to cancer in 1964. In tribute to her impact on the environment, the home of Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), was named the Rachel Carson State Office Building (RCSOB) in her honor.
Today, thanks to the banning of DDT, and state and federal wildlife agencies and other organizations' reintroduction programs, the recovery of these raptors has led to the removal of the bald eagle, osprey, and peregrine falcon from the federal Endangered and Threatened Species List. The falcon nest site on the RCSOB symbolizes the rebound in population enjoyed by peregrine falcons within the Commonwealth and is a testament to the monumental contribution of Rachel Carson.
