4/23/2021  ::   We have a pip!

It all begins with a pip, which the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines as a verb: "to break through the shell of the egg." The first external pip appeared around noon today which indicates hatching is underway. Interestingly, the "first" pip occurs internally, as the body of the chick straightens and contracts, which forces the egg tooth against the egg's air cell, piercing it. This releases a limited supply of oxygen and enables the chick's lungs to begin working.

With the egg still sealed and with the chick exhaling carbon dioxide, limiting the amount of available oxygen, the body begins to press against the shell with the egg tooth repeatedly pushing against the shell and eventually breaking through. This is the external pip which allows oxygen to enter the egg to support the chick's breathing. Following this first, external pip, the chick will normally rest for several hours. Since the actual hatching process is so difficult, it may take from 24 up to 48 hours before this process is completed.
