5/29/2020 :: Watch and Rescue Update
The first fledgling that was taken to a wildlife rehabilitator due to concerns over its health, specifically a mite infestation, has been successfully returned to the RCSOB. This young falcon, a small male, was released on the roof at 1:30 pm and within minutes took flight, briefly landed on the PA Department of Education building, and then returned to the top of the RCSOB. Late Friday afternoon it dropped down to a 9th floor ledge where the adult male had left a bird carcass. After feeding, anticipate the fledgling to return to the 15th floor ledge.
Red Creek Wildlife Center staff determined that overall this falcon is in good health and treated it for the mites. It is now continuing to hone its flight skills.
5/29/2020 :: Watch and Rescue Update
Day Four of Falcon Watch and Rescue began with increased pre-fledge activity. Might another fledgling attempt their first flight today? Stay tuned to find out!
The first fledge was May 27. Due to some concerns over this fledgling's health, specifically a mite infestation and being slightly underweight, it was determined to keep this young falcon overnight. Current reports indicate the fledgling is doing well and is ready to be returned to the Rachel Carson State Office Building. That will likely occur today.
There have been questions about banding while the birds are at the rehabilitator. While it was not an easy decision, due to the difficulty in developing a safe protocol for banding, all banding has been suspended for 2020.
