4/8/2008 :: Brooding Continues, All is Well

The fifth egg was laid sometime in the pre-dawn hours of April 1st. This will be the full clutch and the third strait year a clutch of five eggs has been laid. Egg production is determined by nutrition, an indication that the food base is good, the male is a good hunter/provider or both. There will be approximately five and one half weeks of continuous brooding before the eggs begin to hatch. The adult female will do most of the brooding; the male will cover one third of the duties. The male’s primary duty is to provide food for the female. He usually drops food at a know location called a food cache. The most interesting thing to observe during the brooding process is the interaction between the birds. The female seem to call the shots throughout the entire nesting season.

Since they have to keep the eggs warmed, I khan't snag shots of the latest egg - I'll keep trying though!
Here is a shot from last year - they take turns doing this a great deal - watching out for prey and threats!
