Khyra's Mom here:

I'm thankful that the longest hour (day week month year) of my life had a happy ending.

A bit before noon on Sunday, Khyra slipped her collar whilst in the driveway on her leash with me and was OFF. Luckily, the ex had stopped by to drop something off...they took off on foot...I hopped in the Explorer...both of us keeping Khyra in our sights as she headed for the next street via the backyards. Since it was quite cool and crisp, Khyra's snooter was on high alert.

She went from yard to yard - bush to bush - tree to tree. Several times, we were close but we could not make a grab for her.

We managed to keep her in the immediate neighbourhood for a bit but then she was off to the adjoining sections. She stayed within the neighbourhoods - there are probably four sections that butt up to each other with varying stages of development. She ran along the fences where other dogs were out and then moved on to other areas unknown to her.

At one point, the ex and I switched positions and I took off on foot. True to Siberian nature, she'd see me, flash me the smile and the 'ft' and off she'd go. We tried to work her towards the houses and away from the fields. I tried to work her into backyards and toward open garages to increase my chances as snagging her. I knew I'd have but one grab.

I kept looking at her thinking she just HAD to get tired SOON - and planned to wait for that moment.

Then, I lost sight of her and had no idea on which of the streets and/or backyards she might be investigating. I started to cry - I started to think OMD, what am I going to tell the world - what will Mango do for his cat dog judge - is this what Mumsie felt like what Lacie took off for Ohio or New York last week? I decided to walk back to the house and get the Xterra so we would have two vehicles she might agree to go for a ride in. When I ran in for the keys, I shouted to The Doggy Nanny that Khyra was loose in Hepplewhite...Mom threw on some shoes and a coat over her housecoat and took off in the Acura.

Towards the end of the great adventure, there was one point where she was on the edge of the development that had no roads back into it - which meant little chance for us to drive in as we followed her on the mission. Lucky for us, she came back into the section we could keep her within range and almost reach.

I think she finally began to wear down and the ex was able to snag her near some bushes.

We figure it was probably four or five miles we covered through backyards...and it was about an hour. I was never so happy to get her back in the house PERIOD!

I would like to think my theory of walking her the same route everytime we walk helped keep her within this 'sector' - funny thing was she never went across to the side of the street where Max the yellow lab and other dogs we encounter on our walk live.

The pics you see above - as well as the last one on Tuesday's blog show how she crashed for most of the remainder of the day. She was VERY much out of it.

We had the talk - she doesn't know why she would want to leave - but she is a Siberian and it is what they do when freedom presents itself. There were a few times she'd spot me and come racing towards me with the look of 'MOM MOM, it is you' but then she'd run by me because there just had to be SOMETHING there calling to her!

Sorry for the long post but I decided to make use of today's theme and state how thankful I am we got her back.

Then again, I hope it is her we got back and not some imitation?

Hugz&Khysses from Khyra's Khorner

P.S. Yes, this is why I drink!

That is scary! We are glad that you got Khyra back. Mom is always worried that Monty will get loose in Napa. He used to run free on some of his walks in Angwin. But after a few encounters with mean dogs mom stopped that. He hasn't been free for years.

Oh my goodness, I would also need a drink after that!
Bassets are exactly the same when they catch a scent. They become completely deaf and you can be chasing after them for hours.
I know all the thoughts that go through your head during that time - there are so many things that could happen.
Well I guess you have aged a few more years after that adventure mom.

When we heard that story from your Mom on Sunday, we were so startled. You must have really given your Mom terrible angst, MFT. Please do not do that again, you have lots of yard to get lots of sniffs from and you get to go for so many walks - you don't need to go exploring on your own. We are glad your Mom had the extra hands and vehicles to help her. Please give your Mom a sloppy kiss and tell her you won't make her ry any more.

Congrats on all your awards - we haven't seen the turtle one.

Oh Dear.

We know how frightening that can be. Teka is a "runner" and even the electric collar doesn't always keep her if she gets out the front door. We have spent lifetimes chasing her (or so it seems) It does get our old hearts pounding to be chasing her down the alley, knowing that the Parkway is only a football field away.

Our Springer was a great runner. He was also a great fan of car rides. And not too bright, so he fell for the open car door every time.

We hope Khyra has learned her lesson, and are so glad this had a good ending.

That was an adventure. I had a similar one with an earlier dog, but it was raining and late at night (thunderstorms) and so I'm prowling through backyards in the dark, in the rain, and the dog was always 2 yards ahead of me! :)

Oh my! I'm glad all ended well!

I read you on the "Siberian" thing. Ridgebacks are tricky in their ways too. I don't raise my voice often but today, Sheba disputed me on the oh-so-crucial don't cross the road before I (human) say so. Sheba just wanted to get into the middle of the road and stop traffic. I was not happy. Fortunately, there was little traffic, but argh... we've worked so hard on it and she was listening. Now we'll just have to get back to basics again and start all over. And at the end of the day, I say, "She's a ridgeback. That's what they do."

Big hug from us!

I am so glad Khyra is back home with you. It is so frightening when they get away like that.

Have you considered walking Khyra in a harness as opposed to using a leash attached to her collar? We used a harness each time we would walk our greyhound, Sophie. Besides being a sight hound, they are also known for being able to slip their collars. She still wore an ID collar and we only put the harness on her when she would be going for her daily walk or out in the car. She easily learned the routine for putting on the harness.

I'm sure Khyra enjoyed her adventure, but I'm very relieved she is back home safe and sound with you!

Oh my dogness. The only part we like about these stories is their happy ending. We are soooo glad that you got home safely, Khyra (and your moma recovered enough to write this post.) Know that reading this served to heighten Moma's attention to our security. The extent to which her heart was beating was probably enough to last her for a good long while.

Since it's only late morning, she got up and grabbed chocolate and another cup of coffee. We'll try to calm her down.

Be safe. Stay home.

Oh KHYRA!!!! My mom wants you to know, that she had literally, JUST finished emailing my new doggie class teacher, about how I recently escaped the corral (Sammie & I were playing there..and this was later in the day with just mom and I) and just started to RUN!!!!!! Busy road, lots of birds, dirty lake, off I went!!! Mom was horrified. LUCKILY (for mom, and ME!) I found a pretty nice pile of horsey poop, and started munching....mom then grabbed my collar, leashed me, and back in the car I went...
Mom's heart had sunk. We are so glad Khyra is safe and sound!!!

Hugs and snaggle-tooth kisses,

Sheesh, poor mumsie would have been on her tether's end...

Our peeps run completely the other way when we escape and stop calling our name. That always gets us back because, in reality, we want to stay with them. They might be going back to get some treats so we had be better check on that.

Apparently its a bit nerve-wrecking though when this all happens around streets or cars but if calm prevails all ends good they say in hour house (whatever that means).

We've also heard the pinkie say, "if they get run over doing that then at least they died doing what they love". Can you believe it?? They had better be joking...

Khyra hon, try to resist and don't run away. We think it upsets any pinkie greatly so best not too. After all they are our world (and we are theirs).

Oh Khyra, you gave your mom such a scare!!! I did that to my mom a year and a half ago when we move to dis house - it was before the yard was fenced in all the way (it was opened on one side) and I took off chasing a rabbit. Mom and dad ran after me, but had no idea where I was. They called and called. We are in a neighborhood of steep hills and woods. It got dark and they ran home fur flashlights. I came trotting from the neighbors yard wondering what all the fuss was about. My mom was so upset during the 20 minutes I was missing, she thought she was going to die. So she knows exactly how your mom felt.

Hi, Khyra -

That must have been scary for your Mom. We hope you don't do that again.

The day after Thanksgiving I (Hershey) did something like that to Papa. He and I were in the back yard and he turned his back on me - well I took off. I went through the back yard to a neighbor's house on the next street - but through their back yard as well. Mama got a phone call from our neighbor if she lost me - which she didn't know because I was supposed to be in the yard with Papa. I got a real good talking to after that.

Love -

Hershey

Dear Dear Dear Khyra!!!!

Please do NOT do this to your Mom anymore. This is too much for our hearts to handle. I can see your moms face full of tears from here. Siberians are so heartbreaking when they do this!!!!! If they had any idea......OMG! I am so glad you are home safe Khyra. So very glad. These jaunts are our worst nightmares.
Snooter kisses MFT and hugs to mom!

Oh my dog! How in the world did we miss THIS?!? I think we must have read every other days posts but this & just heard about it on your Walkin wednesday video.
As a fellow Sibe, I completely understand! But fur the sake of biped's sanity, (and they have so little of it to begin with), lease don't wander off unattended again. Of course, it was clever to keep them in your sights, but still.....
